After years away from music, Miley Cyrus has emerged from a creative cocoon of sorts to release an outlandish comeback music video for "We Can't Stop" — complete with enormous teddy bears, twerking and a general "I don't give a f-, y'all" attitude

The song itself was quick to stir up controversy with a reference to cocaine ("Trynna get a line in the bathroom") and an easily misheard non-reference to the drug Molly ("Dancing with Miley" versus "Dancing with Molly")

Apple showed off lots of new goodies at WWDC 2013, including an update to the company's best-selling MacBook Air line

The 2013 MacBook Air — available in 11-inch or 13-inch sizes — now comes equipped with Intel's newest Haswell chipset and promises better battery life with improved graphics performance.

Demonstrators have been protesting Turkey's government for weeks in cities across the country, sparked by police brutality against citizens angry over plans to destroy an Istanbul park. Hundreds of thousands of protestors took to the streets in cities across Turkey as the demonstrations evolved into a larger anti-government movement.

Netflix continues to target new international markets, announcing Wednesday that it will be launching its on-demand streaming video service in the Netherlands later this year.

The six-year-old company promises to make an assortment of local and international TV series and films — including its own — available for an as-yet-unspecified monthly subscription fee. Like those in other markets, subscribers in the Netherlands can expect to access the service on their desktop computers as well as on their tablets, smartphones, game consoles and Internet-connected TVs.

Federal Bureau of Investigations Director Robert Mueller confirmed on Wednesday his agency owns and operates a handful of drone aircrafts for domestic surveillance missions

Mueller added in his Senate Judiciary Committee testimony that the FBI's use of those drones is "very seldom," while saying it has not yet codified specific rules governing their operation.

Twitter announced a partnership with Viacom on Wednesday to create social video advertising campaigns around programs on MTV, CMT, VH1, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and others

The partnership will launch with the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. During that show, MTV will serve up real-time, sponsor-supported highlights of notable moments from the show via Twitter. That show is set to air Aug. 25.

Viacom is the latest media company to join the Twitter Amplify program, which the company announced in May. Amplify lets media brands and their advertising partners promote television clips on Twitter — think a 5 or 10-second replay from a basketball game accompanied by a short commercial from Ford, or a weather forecast from The Weather Channel followed by an ad for a restaurant chain. In a clip that aired during Tuesday night's Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the NBC host climbs to the top of a New York City crest to let off some steam. Naturally, yodeling ensues.

To his surprise, Fallon hears another yodel from across the city. It's not an echo — it's a fellow crooner on a nearby perch, none other than Brad Pitt. As previously reported, HBO Go is indeed coming to Apple TV, effective Wednesday. Apple announced that WatchESPN and content from an assortment of other streaming providers are now available on the device as well.

Apple TV owners — at least, those with subscriptions to HBO and ESPN — have been able to stream content from those networks using iPhone or iPad devices (and AirPlay) for some time. The new integration simply saves them the need to pull out a secondary device.

For Apple, the deals offer the company a slight advantage over its competitors, including Roku, which doesn't have access to ESPN, as well as Playstation 3, which doesn't have access to HBO Go. However, ESPN and HBO Go are already available on the Xbox. Read more...

Google's decision to kill off Google Reader may have frustrated longtime users, but it has clearly been a boon for similar RSS reader services, perhaps the most notable being Feedly.

Feedly had 12 million users as of the end of May, up from 4 million users just before Google announced in mid-March that it planned to kill off Reader, a rep for Feedly told Mashable. That represents a threefold increase in users in less than three months.

Apple may integrate LinkedIn into iOS 7 the same way Facebook and Twitter are currently integrated into iOS 6, a new report says.

The code in the developer beta of iOS 7 contains references to a single sign-on system for LinkedIn similar to the one used for Twitter and Facebook, 9to5 Mac reports. With LinkedIn integration, users only need to log into the service once, and they'll be able to share content directly to the service from either Safari or other apps (such as the camera roll).

Deeper LinkedIn integration in iOS 7 makes a great deal of sense considering the service is getting a similar treatment in OS X Mavericks. LinkedIn will be one of the "share sheets" in OS X 10.9, letting users share content from Safari and other Apple apps like Photo Booth. Read more...

John McAfee has been pretty quiet in recent months following a run-in with the law in Belize over a murder investigation, but now he's back in what may be his strangest appearance yet.

McAfee posted a new video to his YouTube page Tuesday night, in which he appears to criticize the antivirus software company he founded and make fun of himself (he's listed as "Eccentric Millionaire" in the video) at the same time.

In the video, McAfee sports a robe similar to that of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and reads several letters he claims to have received from frustrated customers over the years asking how to uninstall McAfee Antivirus. In response, he asks his "friend" and lab technician Bartholomew to explain step-by-step how to uninstall the software, while McAfee cavorts with scantily clad women and sniffs bath salts off a table full of guns. News of Mark Zuckerberg's trip to South Korea is resulting in widespread speculation that Facebook is working with Samsung, the world's largest smartphone-maker, to build a phone specifically tailored for the social network.

Facebook launched in April Home, a software tool geared to make the site's features easier to use and more integrated on mobile, and Samsung was one of the first companies to integrate that feature on devices such as the Galaxy S4. Reports from South Korean news outlets suggest that Zuckerberg's real objective is to ask Samsung to craft a more Facebook-friendly device. That move could in part be precipitated by disappointing sales of the HTC First, the Android-powered Facebook phone made by the Taiwanese company HTC (AT&T has since dropped the unit because of poor sales). But this mix, as well as Samsung's close ties to Google, could make a future partnership with Facebook a murky proposition. Read more...

BuzzFeed's editor in chief Ben Smith posted a statement about Hastings' death on its site

Fab, a two-year-old online store for design goods, is laying the groundwork for further global expansion. The startup announced Tuesday that it has raised $150 million in a partial series D round from investors including Tencent, Atomico, Andreessen Horowitz, Itochu, Menlo Ventures, RTP Capital, Pinnacle Ventures, Lars Hinrichs and Docomo Capital.

The e-tailer, which is headquartered in the U.S., has already made significant headway into Europe. The region now accounts for approximately 40% of sales, founder and CEO Jason Goldberg told Mashable in a phone interview Tuesday. With the help of new investors Tencent, which operates some of the largest web portals and online messaging systems in China, and Itochu, one of Japan's largest holding companies, Fab has set the stage for its move into East Asia and India. Facebook has pushed back the introduction of video ads in its News Feed until the fall, according to a report

Advertising Age cites a "source familiar with the product" as saying the launch, originally set for the spring and then summer, is now being delayed another season. Facebook declined to comment on the matter.

A source told Mashable that Facebook is still trying to convince advertisers of the merits of the ad units, which will fetch around $1 million, though they could go for as high as $2.4 million, according to AdAge Part of the issue is that video is an unproven format on Facebook. Measurement is also an issue. The 15-second ads, which would start automatically without sound, would count as an impression even if consumers don't watch them.
